Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I need to be to volunteer?

We accept volunteers of 12 years of age and older. A parent or legal guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 18 to the initial interview and must assume responsibility for the volunteer’s transportation to and from the agency. In addition, a parent or guardian must sign a consent authorizing emergency medical treatment should the need arise

What kinds of volunteer services do you accept?

Job Development:

This program entails helping people with disabilities find, obtain and retain gainful employment. You would assist clients contracted to provide this service with learning and understanding the requirements of the job.

Supportive Living Arrangements:

In this program, trained Direct Support Trainers teach basic living skills such as cooking, hygiene, money management, etc., to people with disabilities. Your volunteer services would be used to assist the trainers in providing the support, and in rare cases you will fill in when needed if the trainers are unavailable.

Computer Recycling:

In this program, we accept donations of computers and computer-related equipment from local companies and private citizens. A pool of volunteers then refurbishes the computers. The majority are then made available to people with disabilities at little or no cost. Some of the systems are sold to the public to create a cash flow for the agency.

Fundraising/Special Events:

This opportunity is used to increase our funding to enable us to provide special parties and out of town events for our clients. Volunteers would be asked to help at these events to make them successful.

Administrative Office:

This opportunity will provide volunteers with the opportunity to do light computer work, filing, organizing or other needed office duties.

What is the commitment for volunteering?

Volunteering requires a firm commitment.

At Disability Resources/New2U Computers, we do ask for a commitment of at least 2-4 hours per week.

All volunteers have to also get fingerprinted and are required to fill out the forms attached with the exception of the application for employment.
